The domain name is the specific address to a website only one website can be on one domain name. "mydoaminname.com" is an example of a domain name; some famous ones are "google.com", "facebook.com" and "ebay.com".
Domain names are known as "URL's" when you include the full path (e.g. "http://www.nichewhizkid.com/picking-a-domain-name.html" is the URL for this page your viewing - look at the address bar above to check).
You need you own domain name for your website, never use a free website service as they'll display adverts on your site and may even close your site down without warning!
The Perfect Domain Name
When thinking about a domain name for your niche keyword the perfect domain name would be "yourkeyword.com" if your niche has a worldwide appeal.
Tips
- If your niche is something that is mainly sold in one country then a better domain name would be one with the countries extension not the ".com".
- If you sold UK flags for example (which mainly people in the UK want) then "ukflag.co.uk" would be a better domain name than "ukflag.com" as ".co.uk" is more targeted and easier to rank for in the search results.
Hosting Your Website
If you have any problems or are unsure about how to set up your domain name or host then click here for my Hosting guide.
You can check if a domain name is free on the website HostClear.com where you can also get hosting for your website. A host physically stores a website for other people to view and you cannot run your own website without one. I recommend using Host Clear because I've never had any problems with their service.
Click Here to go to HostClear; they offer UNLIMITED space, bandwidth, email accounts and domain add-on so you'll never have to upgrade to a new package in the future if you expand your websites.
What to do if Your Perfect Domain Name isn't Free
It's likely that someone already has the perfect domain name for your niche keyword but you never know until you try!
For the Niche Keyword "DVD Rack" the perfect domain name would be "dvdrack.com":
Unfortunately "dvdrack.com" has already been taken!
You can try adding an "s" at the end of the domain name:
Unfortunately "dvdracks.com" is also taken!
You can try adding a hyphen:
Unfortunately "dvd-rack.com" is again taken!
Let's perhaps be a little more specific in the domain name:
Hurrah "dvdstoragerack.com" is available so that would be a great domain name to buy if your niche was to sell DVD Storage Racks! Checking the amount of traffic for my slightly altered keyword "DVD storage rack" on Google's Keyword Analyzer shows that it still has a good amount of traffic per month.
More Tips for choosing a domain name
- Try not to use complicated words in the domain name as it'll be hard to remember or type into the address bar
- Never buy a domain with an extension ".info", ".biz", ".eu", ".uk.com", ".org", ".tel", ".mobi" etc. stick with ".com" if you can
- If you cannot find a free domain name for your specific niche then perhaps you haven't been specific enough
- If you change your niche keyword then re-check the amount of traffic that keyword has per month on Google's Keyword Analyzer - if it has less than 3,000 searches per month then forget it
- A domain name with no hyphens is better than one with hyphens
- Never use more than one hyphen in a domain name (Google doesn't like domain names with more than one hyphen)
- Keep the domain name length under 30 characters long (as Google doesn't like too long domain names)
- Try not to use numbers in your domain name
- Want to protect your domain name? You can buy the ".net" and any local domain extensions too on top of your ".com"
