"Backlinks" are links on other people's websites that link to your site.
If you image each website were a city then a backlink is like a single road leading towards that city. Bigger cities naturally have more roads leading towards them so to look big and important in Google's eyes you need lots of backlinks!
To write a link in HTML code on a website you come across you need to enter this:
<a href="http://www.yourdomainname.com">Click here to see yourdomainname.com</a>
Obviously replace "yourdomainname.com" with your domain name to make it work for your site.
Why build backlinks now?
You may be thinking "why are you recommending I get a back-link before I've put anything on my site?" well the main reason is that it can take between 3 - 10 days for this back-link to even work! Don't panic we'll get round to adding content to your site very soon.
Your First Article on EzineArticles.com
Ezine Articles is a big article website where you can get your own articles published. Every article on the site is checked by two people before it get submitted so only quality articles get accepted and end up on their site; non-quality articles get rejected and this means the Ezine have some amazing content on their site!
| The best thing about EzineArticles.com is that they allow you to put your own back-link on every article you submit; Google regards these links very highly so they really help boost your website up the rankings. |
Right it's time to get writing and you need to write specifically about your niche for this backlink to really work well.
Visit EzineArticles and register as a new user; you can use your own name or create a pseudo-name (fake name) and pretend to be someone else:

Once you have logged in submit a new article by clicking on the new article link:
Think of a snappy title for your article which mentions your niche keyword, here's some examples:
| Niche Keyword | Snappy Title Example |
| Bicycle Bells | "5 Facts About Bicycle Bells you Never Knew!" |
| Chrome Hubcaps | "Get Your Chrome Hubcaps Looking as Shiny as Ever!" |
| Underwater Goggles | "How to Properly Use Underwater Goggles" |
Now write some interesting facts and information about your niche, you can find all sorts of information just by searching Google or picking up an encyclopedia. You need to write at least 250 words and make sure you fill in all the information, below is an example article I submitted:

| Don't ever copy anyone else's text whether it be online or in books. Not only is this breaking copy write laws it is also against Ezine Article's terms and conditions and will get you banned from the site. |
| Don't forget to add your backlink into the "Author Sig." box at the bottom of the submission form or it'll all be for nothing! |
Getting your backlink into the author signature box
Make up a sentence or two about the author of the article and then add your own back-link like in the example above.
Again the code for creating a link in HTML code looks like this:
<a href="http://www.yourdomainname.com">Click here to see yourdomainname.com</a>
| You can make your link even more powerful by naming your link with your keywords. The text used as a link is called the "anchor text" and it gives Google a bigger clue about what page it expects to see when it follows the link. |
If your niche was "ice cube trays" and your URL was "http://www.icecubetrays.com" then this would be the best link for your site:
<a href="http://www.icecubetrays.com">Ice Cube Trays</a>

Getting your article approved can take up to 10 days, once you have submitted 10 quality articles it will only take a day for a new article to be checked as you gain "platinum member" status. Writing more articles will boost your article marketing but perhaps it's better to concentrate on writing for your site firstly which will be covered in the next step.
After you article is accepted by Ezine you'll notice that your site appears in Google shortly afterwards. To see if you're included in Google try searching Google for this term:
